The best app to reduce screen time is usually the free one already on your phone: Digital Wellbeing on Android or Screen Time on iPhone, which show where your hours go and set daily limits. The catch is that every one of those limits can be switched off in a tap or two from the phone in your hand. If that is you, pick by situation: ScreenZen or one sec for a free pause before an app opens, Opal or AppBlock for a block that is harder to cancel, and a physical blocker for the hours you keep losing.
Disclosure: this guide is written by the team that makes bloc. We checked every app's own site or store listing in November 2026. Prices and features change, so check the listing before you decide.

- ·Free first. Digital Wellbeing (Android) and Screen Time (iPhone) do limits and stats well.
- ·The honest problem. Most apps can be undone from the sofa: delete the timer, tap Ignore Limit, cancel the session.
- ·What holds. A block where undoing it costs effort: a no-cancel mode, an unlock condition, or a device you walk to.
Indians spent about 1.1 trillion hours on smartphones in 2024, around five hours a day each, nearly 70 percent of it on social media, gaming and video, according to EY. The Economic Survey 2025-26 called problematic digital use a growing behavioural and public health concern, encouraged families to adopt "structured screen-time limits" and suggested phone-free zones in colleges and workplaces. So the question is not whether to set limits. It is which limits you will not switch off.
What is the best free app to reduce screen time?
The free option that works for the most people is the one built into the phone. Among downloads, ScreenZen is fully free, one sec is free for one app, and Forest's core timer is free.
Android Digital Wellbeing gives you a dashboard, app timers, Focus mode and Bedtime mode. When an app timer runs out, the app closes and its icon dims, and timers reset at midnight. Focus mode pauses a set of apps on a schedule, and Bedtime mode can turn the screen black and white.
iPhone Screen Time gives you App Limits and Downtime on iOS 26 and earlier: daily allowances by app or category, plus a schedule for time away from the screen. On iOS 27 Apple has renamed these Screen Time Schedules and Time Allowances: Schedules set when during the day you can use your apps, and Time Allowances set how long each day.
ScreenZen is the free download to try first. Its site calls it "the only free screen time app for iOS, macOS, Windows and Android", no subscription, and the App Store listing shows only optional tips of $5 to $40. It adds a delay before an app opens, caps how many times you can open it, and can strict block your apps for set hours. Rated 4.9 from 53,000 ratings on the US App Store when we checked.
one sec is free for one app. Pick Instagram, and every tap on it brings a breathing pause before you decide. Unlimited apps need Pro, listed on one sec's help page at $19 a year; its FAQ says prices differ by region, so check the app.
Which app is best to reduce screen time on Android?
Start with Digital Wellbeing. If you keep deleting your own timers, move to AppBlock's Strict Mode or Opal.
About 95 percent of phones in India run Android (StatCounter, October 2026), so this is most readers. Set app timers on your two or three worst apps and schedule Focus mode for study or sleep. Full steps are in how to reduce screen time on Android.
The weakness is built in. To use an app before midnight you delete the app timer. Focus mode has a Take a break button. The PIN for app time limits helps if someone else sets it.
AppBlock is the strict option on Android. Strict Mode locks your setup until you meet an unlock condition you chose: a PIN, a charger, a timer, a cooldown, following your schedule, or approval from a trusted contact. It can also block the Settings app and uninstalling. If you cannot meet the condition, you ask support for an emergency unblock, which for timer blocks means retyping a long text and waiting, with later requests getting harder. The free plan caps Strict Mode at 24 hours on Android; Premium is unlimited, and its price was not shown on the page we read, so check the store listing.
StayFree is a free tracker with app blocking, over-use reminders and a Focus mode with schedules, by Sensor Tower. It is strongest as a stats app. Its iPhone version was rated 2.4 from 112 ratings on the US App Store when we checked. Opal is also on Android as Opal Screen Time Limit & Timer; more on it below.
Which app is best to reduce screen time on iPhone?
Screen Time with Block at End of Limit and a passcode you do not know, then ScreenZen, one sec or Opal.
When you hit an App Limit, iOS shows a block screen with an Ignore Limit button. On Apple's community forum an iPhone user describes the options as "ignore for 15 minutes" and "ignore limit for today", and an Apple Community Specialist quotes Apple's support page: "App Limits refresh every day at midnight, and you can delete them any time". The fix is Block at End of Limit, which only appears once you have set a Screen Time passcode. If you know the passcode, the limit is still a few taps away, so hand it to someone you trust. Full steps are in how to reduce screen time on iPhone.
Opal is the best known iPhone blocker. On the Indian App Store it is "Free · In-App Purchases", rated 4.7 from 11,000 ratings, and needs iOS 18. The free tier gives you three recurring Focus Sessions, unlimited sessions you start right away, Time Limit and Open Limit. The mode where you are "unable to cancel or take a break" needs Pro, listed in India at ₹919 to ₹1,149 a year or ₹230 a month, checked November 2026. See bloc vs Opal for the detail.
one sec's strict block sessions are iOS only and need Pro. The free pause works on both platforms.
Forest turns a focus session into a tree: "Leave early and it withers". The core timer is "free for core focus" and Forest Plus pricing varies by region, so check your store. Forest works through guilt rather than friction: good for a 25 minute study sprint, weak at 11 pm.
Do screen time apps actually work?
Yes, measurably, for the average person. The problem is the override.
The strongest evidence is for one sec. A field experiment with 280 participants over six weeks, published in PNAS in 2023 by Grüning, Riedel and Lorenz-Spreen, found that the app decreased users' actual opening of target apps by 57 percent. On average, 36 percent of the time people tried to open a target app, they closed it again after the pause.
Note the other side of that number: the other 64 percent of the time, people sat through the pause and opened the app anyway. If that is you on a tired night, a pause is not enough. We wrote about why in why willpower isn't enough to stop doomscrolling.
Is there an app that stops you from unlocking apps?
Inside the phone, three come close: Opal's Deep Focus, AppBlock's Strict Mode and ScreenZen's lock mode. None of them can move the exit out of your hand.
How you end a block early, app by app
Sources: Android Help, Apple Community, one sec FAQ, Opal App Store listing and Opal Community, AppBlock help. The bloc row is how bloc works.
Opal's Deep Focus is the strictest app mode we found: "Deep Focus won't let you cancel or bypass at all". It needs Pro. On the easier Timeout difficulty, users on Opal's community forum describe tapping Leave Early to end a session; Opal's own release notes from July list "bringing back Leave early", so check what your version shows.
AppBlock's Strict Mode is the strictest on Android, because the unlock condition can be physical: plug in a charger, wait for a timer, or get a trusted contact to approve. Even its emergency route goes through support.
ScreenZen has a lock mode that, its site says, closes common loopholes, and it can prevent uninstalling.
Here is the honest limit of all three. The app and the block share a phone, and the way around any app is Settings. So the question that predicts whether a tool works is simple: what happens at 11 pm when you want the app back? If the answer is "tap a button", the limit is a suggestion.
bloc takes a different route. bloc (by Letsbloc) is a small magnetic NFC device on your fridge, plus a free app for iPhone and Android and bloc for Chrome for websites. Apps block on their own, on a schedule you set or from a session you start in the app. Open a blocked app and you see a shield screen with a limited peek. To unblock early, you walk to the fridge and tap your phone on the bloc. The tap only unblocks; blocking runs by itself. The exit is a place, not a button. Bloc Score shows how your blocks are going, and several phones can pair with one bloc, so flatmates or a family can share it. ₹1,699, pay once. See how bloc works.
How do screen time apps compare?

Which screen time app should I use?
- ·Free, no downloads: Digital Wellbeing or Screen Time. Turn on grayscale at night and set timers on your top three apps.
- ·Free, with a download: ScreenZen. If one app is the whole problem, one sec's free tier.
- ·Android: Digital Wellbeing for the numbers, AppBlock's Strict Mode with a timer or charger condition for the block.
- ·iPhone: Screen Time with Block at End of Limit and a passcode someone else holds, then Opal if you want a no-cancel mode and are fine with a subscription.
- ·Students: Forest for 25 minute sprints during the day. For exam weeks at home, a scheduled block that does not depend on you turning it on.
- ·You keep dismissing limits: The tool is not the problem. The exit is. Move it out of your hand: an unlock condition, a passcode someone else holds, or a bloc on the fridge.
Use the App Toxicity Ranker to see which apps to limit first, whichever tool you pick.

Frequently asked questions
Which app is best to reduce screen time?
Start free: Digital Wellbeing on Android or Screen Time on iPhone for the numbers and daily limits. If you keep dismissing those, ScreenZen (free) or one sec (free for one app) add a pause before an app opens, and Opal Pro or AppBlock's Strict Mode make a block harder to cancel. For the hours you keep losing, a bloc on the fridge moves the unblock out of your hand entirely.
What is the best free app to reduce screen time?
For most people in India, the free tool is already on the phone: Digital Wellbeing (app timers, Focus mode, Bedtime mode) on Android, or Screen Time (App Limits, Downtime) on iPhone. Among downloads, ScreenZen is fully free with optional tips, one sec limits one app for free, and Forest's core focus timer is free.
Is Opal free in India?
Partly. The free tier includes three recurring Focus Sessions, unlimited sessions you start right away, Time Limit, Open Limit and Focus Reports. The mode where you cannot cancel or take a break needs Opal Pro, listed on the Indian App Store at ₹919 to ₹1,149 a year or ₹230 a month when we checked in November 2026.
Can I block apps so I can't unblock them?
Inside the phone, the closest options are Opal's Deep Focus (Pro), AppBlock's Strict Mode with an unlock condition like a timer or a charger, and ScreenZen's lock mode. All of them still live on the phone you are holding. bloc puts the unblock on your fridge: apps block on a schedule and the only way back in early is to walk over and tap your phone on it.
Do screen time apps actually work?
The best evidence is for one sec: a six week field experiment with 280 people, published in PNAS in 2023, found it cut actual opening of target apps by 57 percent. Built-in limits also reduce use, but only until you tap the override. The apps that hold are the ones where undoing the block costs more than a tap.
