Question 1

Which apps are most addictive?

Accepted Answer

Research consistently shows TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Twitter/X score highest on addiction metrics. Key design features include infinite scroll (no natural stopping point), algorithmic content feeds optimised for engagement, variable reward notifications, and social validation loops.

Question 2

What makes an app toxic for your time and attention?

Accepted Answer

Toxic apps use: infinite scroll (no stopping point), algorithmic feeds (optimised for engagement, not wellbeing), variable reward notifications (unpredictable timing creates compulsive checking), and social comparison features that exploit status anxiety.

Question 3

How do I know which apps to delete from my phone?

Accepted Answer

Rank your apps by: time spent vs intentional use, how you feel after using them, whether you open them impulsively or deliberately, and whether they interrupt focused work. Apps that score poorly on all four are prime candidates for deletion or blocking.

Question 4

Does deleting apps actually help with phone addiction?

Accepted Answer

Deleting apps removes the worst offenders but most people re-install them within days. A more durable approach is adding physical friction to access — where you have to walk to your fridge and tap an NFC device to unlock specific apps — making impulsive use too effortful.
